Photoworks and Aspex Portsmouth are pleased to present an exhibition of new photography by young people from Photography Club in Portsmouth aged 18-24 investigating the history of the Caribbean prisoners of war held at Portchester Castle during the French Revolution in 1797.
Led by artist India Jaggon, the group visited Portchester Castle supported by historians from the University of Warwick, and participated in artist-led workshops exploring themes of freedom, representation, longing, and displacement through photography and storytelling.
Captive Identities is part of Freedom & Photography, a partnership programme developed by Photoworks, English Heritage and the University of Warwick with Aspex Portsmouth made possible through funding from the British Academy’s SHAPE Involve and Engage scheme.
Freedom & Photography is part of a broader partnership between Photoworks and English Heritage, forming part of Shout Out Loud, English Heritage’s national youth engagement programme.
Shout Out Loud provides a platform for young people to explore heritage sites and collections across England, helping them to uncover untold stories from our past. By amplifying their voices, Shout Out Loud puts their ideas and stories at the heart of English Heritage.
